⚠️ PRE-REQUISITE: GPS LOCK FIRST
To fully utilize your Bluetooth APRS radio, ensure the VR-N76 has achieved a solid GPS Lock (icon stays solid). Location coordinates are required for all APRS transmissions.

Full Configuration Workflow

1 Identity & Path (General Settings -> APRS Settings)

  • Callsign: Set your amateur radio callsign with an SSID (e.g., K1ABC-7).
    Standard APRS SSID Recommendations:
-0: Primary station (usually fixed base stations).
-5: Smart devices, phones, or tablets running tracking software.
-7: Handheld radios / Portables (HTs like the VR-N76).
-8: Marine stations, boats, and maritime mobile operations.
-9: Mobile stations running high-power vehicle transceivers (like mobile vehicle stations VR-N7600).
-10: Internet gateways (I-Gated stations) or network control nodes.
-15: Multi-use stations, telemetry monitors, or secondary mobile setups.
  • Path: This defines how your Bluetooth APRS radio signal hops through digipeaters:
    WIDE1-1, WIDE2-1: Standard mobile path (2 hops).
WIDE2-1: For base stations or high-altitude SAR.
    ARISS: Specific for Satellite/ISS tracking.
  • Enable Mic-E: Strongly recommended. Mic-E (Microphone Encoder) significantly compresses data packets, maximizing the efficiency of your Bluetooth APRS radio.
  • Mic-E Type: Select "En Route" for standard movement.

2 Operational Mode (General Settings -> Digital Mode)

  • Enable: Set to ON to start your digital beaconing sessions.
  • Smart Beaconing: This logic adjusts transmission based on speed and turns.
Min Interval: e.g., 30s during travel.
Max Interval: e.g., 1800s when stationary.
  • Digital CH: Select the primary channel. Your Bluetooth APRS radio will run these data packets in the background.
  • Format: Ensure the format is set specifically to APRS.

3 Wireless Link (General Settings -> KISS TNC)

  • Enable: Set to ON to activate the Bluetooth APRS radio modem.
  • Integration: This allows you to link with the HT App or PC software wirelessly. Enable Upload SET MSG for real-time monitoring.
